Once I had a student who was a professor of mathematics. He was going to give an academic report on his major, applied mathematics, in Japanese at Kyoto University. It is not too difficult because mathematicians use a lot of numerical formulae aside from Japanese language in their field, however, it was marvelous that he could prepare for his report despite his basic Japanese level.
On that very day, I was invited to his academic meeting. I sat on a chair on the last row, and listened very seriously, yet understood nothing of the "applied mathematics"!
