Man on!

Man on! Kiterude!

A student of mine plays football on weekends with some Japanese people. He asked me one day, 'How do you say "Man on!!" in Japanese?'. Since I'm not so keen on football, I didn't know the equivalent phrase. I asked my friends later and they said it is 'Kiterude!!'. However, the 'de' in 'Kiterude' is a typical dialect suffix in the Kansai Region including Kyoto. I usually teach standard Japanese, so my students speak it as well. I'm sure that his teammates must have been pleasantly surprised to hear him suddenly using Kansai dialect. But in such an emergency, dialect is more effective!!
