Children and Frogs

Just before sunset, I stepped outside and happened to see a group of local elementary kids in the street. They stood beaming with pride.
“Look what we caught!” they said, holding up a bug case whose bottom area was about the same size as that of a tofu container.
Inside were.... eleven Tonosama frogs, a type of frog native to Japan, known for their large size and greenish color.
They were packed in like sardines. A couple were perched on top of the others, staring out as if questioning all their life choices.
“We’re bringing them to school tomorrow!”
I could already imagine the chaos. Still, I smiled and said, “Wow, that’s.... something.”
I asked, “What will you feed them?”
“My dad’ll catch crickets for them!” one girl replied.
“Really?”
And just then, her dad appeared—with a net in hand and the expression of a man on a mission.
In my living area, the rice planting is complete. They caught the frogs here. Hopefully the frogs get a nice vacation in the school garden pond... after surviving show-and-tell.
