Getsu for Ugetsu
Image from Amazon
One student from North America came to Kyoto with no knowledge of Japanese. However, he was very interested in Kanji. So I introduced some hieroglyphic Kanji characters such as 日, 月, 水 or 木. He then pointed to the character '月', which he should not have known, and said, 'This must be the Getsu for Ugetsu'.
He knew the shape and pronunciation of '月' from the DVD jacket of Kenji Mizoguchi's old film '雨月物語-Ugetsu Monogatari'. I was very surprised.
Kurosawa, Ozu and Mizoguchi are sometimes very famous to my film-loving students.
