watching over

The old shopping arcade

Once, a student of mine working at home had no time to take his 4-year-old daughter to her violin lesson. His wife didn't, either. Then, he said, his little daughter claimed to go to the lesson by herself, which she actually did, and came back after one hour with her tiny violin. He said he was impressed by the social safety in Japan. I think it's because they lived in a provincial area in Kyoto and always went through an old shopping arcade, where many people already knew her as a Kyoto-dialect-speaking little angel with blonde hair, and they watched over her.
