brush-pen

 hiragana "wa" and a brush-pen

Can you imagine what it is in the picture? It is what I always use for students who learn Hiragana letters for the first time. It is a "brush-pen" ("fude-pen" in Japanese), a pen that you can write with as if you were using a brush. Its softness and flexibility is impressive, and quite different from normal pens. Since the Japanese letters require much energy to memorize, using interesting stationery helps reduce the feeling of pressure on novice students, though you can learn Japanese only with Roman letters if you want.
